Your Student Loans Will Affect Your Credit Score

If you’re worried about the impact a student loan could have on your credit, know that how you handle it will determine whether that effect is positive or negative

…Student loans are a form of debt, which means having one will affect your credit score. Of course, it’s pretty hard to get through school without one.

If you’re worried about the impact a student loan could have on your credit, know that how you handle it will determine whether that effect is positive or negative.
How a Credit Score is CalculatedYour credit score is an extremely important number. As a soon-to-be or recent college grad, your credit score will play a huge role in your financial future. Basically, it gives lenders and creditors an idea of how financially responsible you are–how heavily you rely on credit and whether you pay bills on time, for example–and helps them judge the level of risk you present as a borrower.

Your credit score will play into how easily you can obtain credit cards, loans and even an apartment, so taking care of it now will save you a lot of grief in the future. Here’s a breakdown of how your score is calculated:

How Bad Is eBay Fraud?

You’ve heard the horror stories and have been told be to careful on eBay, but is fraud really so common these days?

…of Microsoft branded software on eBay was illegitimate. This study illustrates the far-reaching nature of this kind of fraud, and leaves users to wonder what percentage of other highly coveted items are fake.
Not even name brand electronics are safe from counterfeiters. Earlier this month, TechWorld reported that several eBay scammers were creating and selling fake Apple iPads for $80.00 $100.00. The devices look like a smaller iPad, but run Android software. Such stories can be found in almost every market from fashion to technology. If you find any of the following popular and normally expensive items for sale on eBay at huge discounts, they are most likely counterfeit:

Electronics.
Designer clothing.
Computer software.
Movies and music.
Autographs.
Collectibles
Antiques.

Ebay users are encouraged to remember the old saying if its too good to be true, it probably is. No sane person would take a loss worth hundreds of dollars to get you a new Chanel bag for $50.00.
Triangulation…

Best Buy sends cease-and-desist for God Squad Beetle [Video]

Proving that even the Holy Father is not above trademark law in America, Best Buy’s legal department has contacted a priest over copyright infringement.

…Best Buy’s Geek Squad is a well known, highly advertised division of the electronics retailer that specializes in troubling issues with computers and other electronics devices. God Squad, on the other hand, is the name for a Catholic priest’s outreach efforts that just so happens to share a very similar logo design, and even the same Volkswagen Beetle.Unfortunately for the priest, Reverend Luke Strand, Best Buy’s trademark attorney’s realize that they must pursue the God Squad as fervently as any other individual or organization that may infringe on purpose or by accident on key trademarked names or logos. U.S. trademark law states that if a company knowingly allows others to violate their trademark filings, over time they forfeit the right to lay claim to their trademarks. As Fox 11 WJUK-TV points out, Rev. Luke Strand’s vehicle and logo use were a dead ringer for the Best Buy troubleshooting squad, and whether or not Best Buy truly wanted to pursue the holy man, they had no choice. Man Attempts to Trademark "Ganja" with U.S. Patent Office

…On April 1, the U.S. patent office announced a new trademark: “Processed plant matter for medicinal purposes, namely medical marijuana.” The category was killed three months later when the Wall Street Journal asked about it, but in the meantime ganjapreneurs nationwide filed some very interesting pot trademarks — with some of the most colorful coming from Colorado.
At least 20 of the 151 or so applications filed for the new trademark came from Colorado — and there are likely more, filed by trademark lawyers and experts in other states working on behalf of Colorado entities. Some were from local dispensaries trying to protect their name, like the ReLeaf Center and Total Health Concepts. Others were for pot services such as Nug Source, an ad company. And then there were pot products, like “MountainMedibles,” a line of pot-infused edibles purportedly ranging from bagel chips and egg rolls to instant noodles and matzo, as well as “Dr. Canna Cola,” a name we assume speaks for itself.

Yes, someone tried to…

It’s a Fee-for-All as Credit Card Companies

In the wake of recently enacted legislation limiting how much credit card issuers can charge and for what, banks are cooking up innovative fees and fines

…In the wake of recently enacted legislation limiting how much credit card issuers can charge and for what, banks are cooking up innovative fees and fines and new ways of implementing them.
The new limitations that spurred this cash-reaping renaissance are, for the most part, reasonable. For instance, one states that consumers paying more than 19 percent interest on more than $20,000 debt racked up during online shopping sprees must be given a barrel with comically large suspenders attached.
Nevertheless, the best and brightest and most evil minds at the credit card companies are hard at work looking for nanotube-sized loopholes to make up lost revenues.
This should surprise nobody. Credit card companies are, in essence, giant juggernauts designed for the sole purpose of coming up with ways to charge money for intangible, and in some cases incomprehensible, services. They are unstoppable entities that don’t feel pity or remorse or fear and will absolutely not stop, ever, until you fork over $35. Attempts to…

Goldman defends its collateral calls to AIG

Goldman Sachs said that it believed its trades with the bailed out insurer AIG during the financial crisis were accurate and its collateral calls made to AIG were reflective of the conditions in a deteriorated market.

…In a response submitted to the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (FCIC) on July 28, Goldman said it priced the collateral posted by AIG based on the best available market information at the time, including observed trades, actionable bids or offers from other parties.
Earlier in July, Goldman made similar comments to the Commission, insisting that their collateral demands were based on legitimate market prices.
At the time, Commission members questioned whether Goldman was deliberately driving down prices for its own gain.
The Commission on Monday said it was reviewing Goldman’s valuation documents and said it was too early to say whether members were satisfied with the information.
In Goldman’s report to the FCIC, the bank reiterated: “We made those collateral calls based on prices that reflected the deteriorating conditions in the market for the underlying collateral in residential mortgage backed securities and collateralized debt obligations (CDOs).
On July 23, a source told Reuters that Goldman Sachs…

China Overtakes Japan As No. 2 Economy

China has overtaken Japan to become the world’s second-largest economy, the fruit of three decades of rapid growth that has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.

…China overtakes Japan as No. 2 economySaturday, July 31, 2010By Aileen Wang and Alan Wheatley ,ReutersBEIJING — China has overtaken Japan to become the world’s second-largest economy, the fruit of three decades of rapid growth that has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. Depending on how fast its exchange rate rises, China is on course to overtake the United States and vault into the No. 1 spot sometime around 2025, according to projections by the World Bank, Goldman Sachs and others. China came close to surpassing Japan in 2009 and the disclosure by a senior official that it had now done so comes as no surprise. Indeed, Yi Gang, China’s chief currency regulator, mentioned the milestone in passing in remarks published on Friday. “China, in fact, is now already the world’s second-largest economy,” he said in an interview with China Reform magazine posted on the website (www.safe.gov.cn) of his agency, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange. Cruising past Japan might give China…

Telemarketers Ignore Do Not Call List - Surprise? No.

The Federal Trade Commission announced a milestone this week: its Do Not Call registry has just passed 200 million numbers.

…). This is a proposal not to regulate but to prohibit speech, not because it’s deceptive or abusive, but because it’s unpopular. As was said here, there is public sentiment against telemarketing, per se. Some people are mad. Some people are fed up. Some people just hate such calls, but freedom of speech, our most cherished freedom, means the freedom to speak when it’s against public sentiment.
For good measure, the same speaker later switched gears and praised the millions of people employed in telemarketing (many part-time), saying that the overwhelming number who are employed in this business are lawful, patriotic and normal Americans, and for the Government to cut out a series of these jobs is a very serious matter.
These Americans might have been normal and patriotic, but the rest of the country just wanted to eat in peace. Testimony at the same hearing from one aggrieved mother conjured up the specter of those dark days, back before the federal list existed and rules governing telemarketing were…
