12 Natural Resources by Country [Infographic]

Will China and Brazil eat up their own vast resources, or become power-house, next-generation exporters? Will the new and more dangerous forms of Wheat Rust erode economies reliant on the product of that stable?

…There are stocks and bonds, options trades and commodities markets, but people sometimes focus a bit too much on the former more mainstream aspects of investing and less than they should on the latter sets a commodity can lie semi-secret in some big-picture, stock-and-bond views, then tip the market at a critical time. Skip gross domestic product and national debt questions for a moment and remember this: at the heart of many economies lie a set of natural resources that have intrinsic and long-term value, playing a vital role in their market viability both now and in the future.

Will China and Brazil eat up their own vast resources, or become power-house, next-generation exporters? Will the new and more dangerous forms of Wheat Rust erode economies reliant on the product of that stable? To what extent will water (and access to it) shape the financial and political futures of both developing nations and super powers? These are questions well worth asking, since your…

The Worst Examples of Inflation Ever

When most of us think of inflation, we see it as a minor annoyance that has caused prices to rise, slowly, over the 20th century. However, inflation can move much faster than what most in the western world are used to.

…s decision to take land from white farmers and give it to black farmers, which caused food production and the revenues from its export, to plummet. In 2004, inflation in the country reached 624 percent, and by 2006 it had risen to 1,730 percent. By June 2007, the inflation in Zimbabwe rose to 11,000 percent year-to-year, to cope with the inflation the Bank of Zimbabwe issued checks valued at 100 Million and 200 Million. Ten days later, more checks were issued for 500 million Zimbabwe Dollars, which equaled $2.5 U.S. Dollars. This continued to the point when checks worth $100 billion were being issued and the estimates of inflation for the country reaching 9 million percent, which effectively made the value of the Zimbabwe currency $688 Billion per $1 U.S. Dollar. Apparently, inflation reached its max by some estimates in November 2008 with a rate of 89,700,000,000,000,000,000,000 percent. Eventually, the currency was abandoned and only foreign currencies were used.

Job losses: Charting the "Great Recession" | OregonLive.com

Chart shows just how far the current economic downturn diverges from previous recessions, at least in terms of job losses.

…Blogster Bill McBride caused spilled coffee and corn flakes far beyond his California home Friday when he posted this graph. It’s a depiction of how far the current economic downturn diverges from previous recessions, at least in terms of job losses. McBride, a retired corporate executive, writes a blog called Calculated Risk. He used U.S. government data to assemble the graph, which shows job losses in percentage terms. The chart tracks the percent job losses over time, relative to peak employment. “For the current employment recession,” McBride wrote, “employment peaked in December 2007, and this recession is by far the worst recession since World War II in percentage terms.” The sinking red line, and its persistence, jangled nerves of Calculated Risk followers including Bill Valentine, an investment advisor in Bend. Valentine was up early Friday as usual to watch the markets, and to get national unemployment figures released that day. To Valentine, the graph illustrates the enormity of what economists…

Recession was worse, deeper than previously thought

The recession was deeper than the government previously thought. The economy’s plunge underscores why the unemployment rate surged to 10.1 percent in October, a 26-year high.

…WASHINGTON — The recession was deeper than the government previously thought. The Commerce Department, in revisions issued today, estimates the economy shrank 2.6 percent last year — the steepest drop since 1946. That’s worse than the 2.4 percent decline originally estimated. The economy’s plunge underscores why the unemployment rate surged to 10.1 percent in October, a 26-year high. The revisions in gross domestic product, or GDP, now show zero growth in 2008. That compares with a 0.4 percent gain previously estimated. The economy also grew less in 2007 (1.9 percent) than earlier thought (2.1 percent). For all three years, consumers spent less and home builders cut more deeply than had been thought. Those factors help explain the downward revisions on the economy. The revisions also show that struggling state and local governments cut spending more last year than previously thought. And they spent less in 2007 and 2008. The economy slid into its worst recession since the Great Depression in late 2007….

Indeed, even if the most crucial professionals, like doctors, have their own ways of scaring you into agreeing to their offerings. We look at how 25 everyday people and industries take a bite out of you by playing on your fear.
(Note: I read a lot of sociologist Frank Furedi’s material before writing this post. I was especially influenced by his ideas on religion, wellness, experts, advocacy, and the environment. I want to encourage readers to read more of Furedi’s work, as he’s a true expert on society and fear.)
