Jim Rogers predicts a new recession in 2012

Jim Rogers, the market sage, has warned the global economy is just two years away from another recession, but remains ill-prepared to cope with the after-effects.

…”For me a double-dip is another recession before we’ve healed from this
recession. The probability of that kind of double-dip is more than 50pc. I
actually expect it,” he said. His prediction came despite the…

Who is Bob Dudley? (the man named as new BP chief)

Bob Dudley, The man named as a replacement for BP chief Tony Hayward could be just what the company needs.

…Since then, he’s worked with various BP (BP) divisions, including a brief stint helping to oversee the company’s solar, wind and hydrogen businesses. Most recently, he headed up TNK-BP, a joint venture that would become Russia’s third-largest oil and gas company. He was named to BP’s board in 2009. Dudley’s breadth of work experience and tenure within the oil industry make him a natural choice to succeed Hayward. But many believe what has thrust him to the top is his background as a native of the Gulf Coast region.Dudley, who grew up in Mississippi, has expressed a personal commitment to the clean-up effort and reiterated that pledge on Tuesday.BP swings to massive $17.2 billion loss”In this change of roles, I particularly want the people of the Gulf Coast to know that my commitment to remediation and restitution in the region is not lessened. I gave a promise to make it right and I will keep that promise,” he said in a statement after being named to his new post.Dudley, 54, has spoken of moments swimming,…

Ford turnaround picks up speed

Ford Motor continued its successful turnaround as better-than-expected sales and profits easily outdistanced expectations and reversed the operating loss of a year ago.

…The results were the best quarterly results for Ford in six years and marked the fourth straight quarterly operating profit for the company, which had suffered more than than four years of steady losses before it returned to profitability in the second half of last year.Ford was the only major U.S. automaker not to go through bankruptcy in 2009, but its year-ago results were still hurt by overall weakness in the U.S. economy and one of the worst quarters of overall auto sales on record. It suffered an operating loss of $638 million, or 21 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. The company has been steadily gaining market share over the last year, with the introduction of critically-acclaimed new vehicles. A year ago it was behind both General Motors and Toyota Motor (TM) in U.S. sales, but it moved back in front of Toyota this year.Even better results ahead. “We are ahead of where we thought we would be despite the still-challenging business conditions,” said Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally in a…

Cities Rent Police, Janitors to Save Cash

After years of whittling staff and cutting back on services, towns and cities are now outsourcing some of the most basic functions of local government, from policing to trash collection.

…By TAMARA AUDI Faced with a $118 million budget deficit, the city of San Jose, Calif., recently decided it could no longer afford its own janitors. So the city’s budget called for dropping its custodial staff and hiring outside contractors to clean its city hall and airport, saving about $4 million. To keep all its swimming pools open and staffed, the city is replacing some city workers with contractors.”These are cases where the question is being asked, ‘Is this a core service at the city level?’ ” said Michelle McGurk, senior policy adviser to the San Jose mayor. After years of whittling staff and cutting back on services, towns and cities are now outsourcing some of the most basic functions of local government, from policing to trash collection. Services that cities can no longer afford to provide are being contracted to private vendors, counties or even neighboring towns. Mystery trader buys all Europe’s cocoa

Even Willy Wonka might struggle to use this much chocolate.

…Barbara Crowther, a spokesman at the Fairtrade Foundation, said that no
farmers in West Africa would benefit from the higher prices. She said: “This
speculation only serves to increase volatility and uncertainty. Part of the
problems in rent years have been the lack of investment in improving cocoa
farms. But the farmers have already been paid a set price none of this
money will filter down to them.”…

WASHINGTON The once-popular ethanol industry is scrambling to hold onto billions of dollars in government subsidies, fighting an increasing public skepticism of the corn-based fuel and wariness from lawmakers who may divert the money to other priorities. The industry itself can’t agree on how to persuade Congress to keep the subsidies, which now come in the form of tax credits worth about $6 billion annually. One industry group, Growth Energy, made the bold move Thursday of calling for the tax credits to be phased out completely in favor of spending the money on more flex-fuel cars and gasoline pumps that support ethanol. A rival group, the Renewable Fuels Association, said it’s too late in the year to make such proposals the tax credits expire at the end of the year, and legislative days are numbered. As the industry bickers over what to do, Congress is signaling it’s growing tired of paying for…

The wealthy are bad at paying mortgages

Here’s something the banks didn’t expect. The rich are abandoning their million-dollar loans at a surprising rate. In fact, of homeowners with loans of more than $1 million, one in seven is seriously delinquent, according to The New York Times.

…4Monday, July 12, 2010 10:38:26 PMYes- neonguy said it, collateral. That’s really what’s at stake for the bank during the decline. Nothing to do with evil, society, GW or obama, young and old, etc. There’s no law breaking, stealing, immorality, etc. When it hits the fan, banks will still hold the collateral. The value may have declined, but the real property still exists. Nobody should be going to jail or be forced into bankruptcy. The contract failed and it terminated in accordance with our laws. It’s the natural course of a market correction and the quicker we get through it through write-downs, foreclosure, walking away, without government intervention, the faster the economy will recover and the jobs will return. Collateral is a very simple concept that deals with risk. You’ll be punished enough by the credit ding for a decade or more. Do what you need to do to survive and keep what you can. The times are extraordinary so we have a bunch of people who ordinarily wouldn’t be doing something crazy like…

Levis, Patagonia, REI Unified on Climate Change Threat

The Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), a trade group whose members include Levis, Patagonia, REI, the North Face, and 4,000 other manufacturers, retailers, distributors and adventure companies, has joined together to push for passage of comprehensive climate and energy legislation.

…It s July 4th weekend in 2025, and you re an outdoors lover looking to go rafting and trout fishing in the national park formerly known as Glacier.
The only problem, in the midst of the longest drought on record, is that many rivers in Montana — as well as the rest of the Northwest — are drying up, and trout can’t survive the ever-warmer water.

Oh well, how about a hike instead? That s off the table, too — wildfires and pine-bark beetles have ravaged the parched region for years, so now many of those trails on your old map are eroded and dangerous.

This is far from fantasy: Outdoor pursuits will be among the first activities widely altered by climate change. And now, many of the $730 billion outdoor industry s largest companies are getting vocal about it.

The Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), a trade group representing more than 4,000 manufacturers, retailers, distributors and adventure companies, recently joined the business coalition Business for Innovative Climate & Energy Policy (BICEP). BICEP S…
