The Future of Ad Agencies and Social Media

We talked with five ad pros to find out what they predict for the future of social media marketing.

…you might even consider including a few highly technical, very creative engineers in your creative team, not just as part-time or freelance collaborators.Groups and Friends: The Power of the Hive MindIf you want to get inside your clients’ customers’ heads, just take a look at what their friends and peers are doing, saying and buying. We asked David Armano, Senior Vice President at Edelman Digital, if he thought group or friend buying behavior could be used as a recommendation system for goods and services. His answer was resoundingly affirmative. If the numbers behind Groupon’s recent success with The Gap is any indicator, the answer is yes. For reference, the partnership between the group-buying site and the national retailer completely smashed sales records for both entities with a simple digital coupon. But group buying is most powerful when combined with sharing across social networks. The key, continued Armano, is that the group buying activity needs to be be present in your friends’ streams. Combine…

Facebook Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Like Buttons

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Facebook in a Los Angeles County Superior Court alleging that the company commercially misappropriated the names and likenesses of minors without parental consent. The plaintiffs are seeking financial restitution for revenues and profits the company and third-parties earned from the alleged charges. In the suit, David Cohen v.

…)And I thought this article was going to be about celebrities with pages who are minors. Amie Rae Shugartthe case is so ludacrise, guess kids will no longer be able to wear logo’d branded shirts, shoes, or anything else. we will have to force all businesses to sell under a no-name brand under the law, especially if the object is to be used by …minors…whats next? forcing Reebok, nike, abercrome, and other major brands to remove their names from clothing and apple, and other tech manufacturers to remove their names from all products used by minors because if they use it their friends will want to use it therefore its advertising to other minors and therefore breaking the law! quippdNot the same thing, since it is not the “name, voice, signature, photograph, or likeness” — it is the actual person doing this. Michael BirnholzWhy can’t we all just get along? All kidding aside how come Al Gore isn’t suing everyone since he Invented the …. quippdWhile most of the comments here seem to be against this lawsuit,…

10 Hilarious Cover Letter Blunders

Trying to get your foot in the door? Here’s what NOT to say in your opening salvo.

…none of us would be idiotic enough to include any of the following in an introductory e-mail or cover letter.
These are actual examples of job search stupidity provided by a friend of ours who’s a professional recruiter. Some of the specifics have been changed to protect the inept, but they’re proof positive that the economy isn’t solely to blame for today’s horrendous employment statistics.

If I could use one word to describe myself, it would be Team Player….

Four Surprisingly Lucrative Businesses

Ever wanted to make millions, but the conventional ways are just way too boring?

…of the cost.
To put this in perspective, a study in 2007 found that bottled water on average was more expensive than gas. Right now, if you wanted to, you could get any old bottle, fill it with your own tap water and then flog it at several times the original cost.
The Homeopathy Remedies Industry

People who believe in homeopathy like to think that illnesses can be cured by ingredients that cause similar symptoms to the illness (or just whatever’s lying around, really). This ingredient is then diluted with water to the point that no molecule from the original ingredient is in the actual remedy. There more water there is, the more potent the remedy. No, none of this is supposed to make sense.
Even after drinking gallons of homeopathic beer, we still couldn’t make sense of this.
Suffice to say, this is all bullshit, and all they’re left with is harmless water. The skeptic James Randi has proven this on a number of occasions by committing homeopathic suicide . To noone’s surprise, Randi is still alive today…

BP Stock Price and the affect of the Oil Spill

We all know that every time there is a worldwide event, investors have a chance to capitalize and make money in the markets, especially when it comes to an environmental disaster.

…Many investors will try to buy familiar names that historically react favorably oil spills. Longer term investors may buy companies like MOPN and EVTN and are hoping for a home run while penny stock flippers and day traders step in and provide constant liquidity.

In the end though only a select few of these names actually benefit from these disasters financially. Only a few contracts are actually given out, so be selective….

Ex-Twitter Employee Didn’t Want to Work for an "Ad Company"

5by5’s Dan Benjamin interviewed Twitter’s former lead developer Alex Payne and the two discussed Payne’s views on the company and its business model.

…it makes a decision to do something and then announces it. When discussing the company’s new advertising model, this is what Payne had to say (emphasis ours): The move toward making advertising a core part of the business makes a lot of sense for the company’s future and profitability, but from my perspective, that’s one of the things that let me know that it was time for me to leave because I wasn’t interested in working for an ad company. For a long time, the promise at Twitter was that we were going to look at different ways of making money, and to some degree I feel that hasn’t happened. This mirrors our observations about Twitter. Although the company initially made statements that it wouldn’t use advertising as its only business model, expansion into other areas like offering developers paid-access to more services or more requests hasn’t happened. It will be interesting to see how the microblogging site continues to evolve in the future, given Payne’s departure and the growing tension between Twitter…
