The Four Horsemen of the Job-pocalypse

The Hiring Crisis, the Part-Time Crisis, the Earnings Crisis and the Health Care Crisis.

…With 25 million Americans broadly unemployed, enough to fill the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, our job crisis is multi-dimensional. First, as we know, very few employers are hiring. Even when they announce job openings, they’re slow to fill them. Second, when employers set aside money for workers, they’re increasingly adding contracters rather than full time staff. Third, a team of factors are depressing the wages and benefits of our workforce. Fourth, even if you’re hired at a decent wage, the rampant rise of medical inflation will eat into your salary in the years to come. There you have it: the Hiring Crisis, the Part-Time Crisis, the Earnings Crisis and the Health Care Crisis. Together, I’ll call them the four Horsemen of the Job-pocalypse.I. The Hiring CrisisThere are five unemployed workers for every one job opening today, more than twice the historical average. What’s more, employers are taking their time to fill those few spots. As the WSJ reported last week, job openings are up 26…

How To Invest In Water

Many people believe that water will be privatized in the next few decades. Without question, we’ve already seen a move in that direction just by the dominance of bottled water in the beverage industry, and private companies taking over the water needs of many cities, states and countries

…Intersting topic. With a growing world population, the need for water will only increase. As it is now, there are millions of people without good drinking water.
Water is a need. If you had to choose water or an iPhone, you would choose water. If you had to choose water or a house, taking it to an extreme, you would still choose water. Without water you won’t survive, without a house, you could find a cave:)
Also interesting to consider ethical perspectives of this. I’ll have to think about this one a bit before taking a stand but I would say that it’s a very forward-thinking topic to consider….

Online Video Sites Cash in On Live Lucrative Ventures

“A lot of the sponsors we’re working with today are asking us for more live events,” Caraeff says. “Did I think we would be doing this live event strategy so soon?

…s framework is built around selling advertising against self-triggered scarcity. Creating a sole source for music videos on the internet, Vevo could generate revenue by being the single entity selling ads around them.

An even more lucrative option is a live event. Consumer brands get a trifle touchy with the idea of missing out on the wide online audience that a live event has to offer, letting the sponsor place ads at every strategic point during and after the event. Notwithstanding the fact that a live video is more capable of attracting an engaged viewer, a tad unlikely with simple music streaming. Which is why, sponsors scamper to grab any good opportunity they get.
A lot of the sponsors we’re working with today are asking us for more live events, Caraeff says. Did I think we would be doing this live event strategy so soon? Not exactly. I thought we’d be getting into this at the end of our first year, not in the first one or two quarters of our business. So it’s something we’ve moved up in our road map…

In most cases, the easier it is for the visitor to do what they want on the site, the higher the conversion rate will be. Do not try to reinvent the wheel when it comes to the layout.
The layout will highly depend on what you are selling.

91% of consumers will not pay for Times Online

Most consumers (91%) would be unwilling to pay £1 a day or £2 a week to access the Times Online’s, according to research, with a mere 4% of readers saying they would pay a £1 for a day’s access and only 5% saying they would fork out £2 for a week’s digital subscription.

…could be a best-case scenario, rather than a likely case? Lots of publishers are hoping this will be a trial they can learn from. Do you really think NI are going to publish numbers if they’re massively below expectations? Or they could just publish the first week’s figures and keep quiet if the sales drop off a cliff the following week… No ABC audits remember!…

Are People Spending More Time Shopping with Technology?

Comparison sites, delivery services, online discount outlets - it seems that you can do or buy anything online today.

…Depending on the type of consumer you are, the answer could go either way. Since all shoppers behave somewhat differently, it is impossible to say for sure whether the advent of shopping technology decreases the time spent shopping or actually increases it. However, you can determine the impact technology has had on your personal shopping habits by considering the issues below.
How Delivery Services Save Time

(source)
There are many ways in which online shopping technology can save you time when compared to a weekly or biweekly trip to the grocery store. In the case of delivery services, the most obvious time-saving benefit is that you don’t actually have to go to the store. Take a second to think about all that is involved in going grocery shopping. First you must drive to the supermarket, perhaps stop for gas on the way, find a parking spot, and locate a cart whose wheels don’t stick. Once you’re inside the store, you must navigate through poorly organized aisles and shelves, find every item you need…

Goldman’s Big Short | Mother Jones

Did Goldman Sachs lie about their mortgage shorts? The New York Times reports that Goldman Sachs is a big fat liar:

…Sat Apr. 24, 2010 9:10 AM PDTThe New York Times reports that Goldman Sachs is a big fat liar:

In late 2007 as the mortgage crisis gained momentum and many banks were suffering losses, Goldman Sachs executives traded e-mail messages saying that they were making some serious money betting against the housing markets.
The e-mails, released Saturday morning by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, appear to contradict some of Goldman s previous statements that left the impression that the firm lost money on mortgage-related investments.

Hmmm. Really? What statements were those?

Carl Levin, Democrat of Michigan and head of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, said that the e-mail messages contrast with Goldman s public statements about its trading results. The 2009 Goldman Sachs annual report stated that the firm did not generate enormous net revenues by betting against residential related products, Mr. Levin said in a statement Saturday when his office released the documents. These…

SEC Staff Watched Hours of Porn as 2008 Meltdown Happened

Several senior SEC staffers spent hours daily watching porn on their work computers even as the massive financial crisis was unfolding in 2008, according to agency’s inspector general.

…Computerworld - Several senior staffers at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) spent hours daily watching porn on their work computers even as the massive financial crisis was unfolding in 2008, according to agency’s inspector general. In a report prepared by SEC Inspector General David Kotz at the behest of Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), Kotz cited 31 investigations of workers who had violated SEC rules regarding the use of government computers and time to view pornographic and sexually explicit images. The probes covered a two-and-a-half year period dating back to 2007. Seventeen investigations involved senior SEC staffers earning between $100,000 and $222,000 annually. In many cases, the Kotz’s office obtained on-the-record admissions from the employees involved, though the report does not say how, or even whether, the employees were disciplined. Kotz’s report lists several instances where SEC employees spent several hours daily on porn. One such case involved a senior attorney at the SEC’s…

54% of Households Have Someone Who’s Without Work

…year-over-year. Retail stocks look nice. But this misses a bigger picture. Consumers are people, and consumer confidence grows from an improving labor market. So maybe this helps put things in perspective. In a new Pew survey, more than half of respondents said someone in the house has been without a job and looking for work in the past year. Nine months after the economy stopped shrinking, this is what a bummed recovery looks like:

Annie Lowrey, who passes along this telling chart, also points to the 70 percent who reported major financial difficulty in the last year, including trouble paying for rent or health care. For analysts who wonder why consumers sound so depressed every time we ask for their opinion: please look at this chart carefully….

From 1862 to 2010: 13 Historical U.S. $100 Bills

With the introduction of the new $100 bill, the government hopes to frustrate the growing number of counterfeiters who have access to more advanced technologies than ever, and who are able to create fake money that looks so real it sometimes fools experts.

…The $100 bill is the most frequent target of counterfeiters operating outside of the United States, and the changes to the new $100 bill are meant to be “very obvious and visible,” according to Larry Felix, the director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The new bill has a blue security ribbon that gives a 3-D effect to micro-images that the thousands of lenses will be magnifying. Tilt the note back and forth, and you will see tiny bells on the ribbon change to 100s as they move.

Other changes to the bill: To the left of Franklin’s portrait is an inkwell that will change color from copper to green when the note is tilted. The movement will also make a Liberty Bell appear and disappear inside the inkwell….
