The 4 Levels Of Link Building

SEO experts and internet marketing professionals know that the key to high search engine rankings is link building.

…SEO experts and internet marketing professionals know that the key to high search engine rankings is link building. They will also tell you that link building is not all that easy until you have done it for awhile, and that there are so many techniques for link building that It is hard to sort them all out. Here are the 4 levels of link building to take you from novice to expert.

1. Do It Yourself, Quick and Easy. The easiest links to build are those for which you do not have to rely on anyone but yourself. The easiest way to do this is to submit your site to directories. Simply submit your URL, the name of your company, and a short description of your company. Know before you begin that directories are managed by humans, so you may not see results right away. Also know that some directories require a small fee for your listing.

You should also use social media as a way to get links to your page. SEO experts do not find these crucial to success, but they are still a pretty simple and cheap way to target an…

Open source brings new meaning to UGC

A project supported by the Knight Foundation could spark a revolution in local journalism - not only in content, but also in community involvement.

…it now employs 60 people and strives to use open records to make bureaucracy transparent. And the company just released OpenGeo Suite, a “complete open-source web-mapping suite.”
In this era of user-generated content and crowdsourcing, building new, hyperlocal sites and widgets and aggregators using open source software makes tremendous sense. It’s another way to involve your audience in your publication, and one that can only benefit everyone on both sides of the equation.
Another nice thing about hyperlocal content is that the same processes that slice and dice the news according to address can also serve up ads appropriate to the location. Mom and pop businesses can find cost-effective online platforms for advertising. If a news organization covers a county of 1 million people and more than 400 square miles, for example, it might not make sense for a restaurant at far eastern reaches of the county to advertise to the entire readership. But serving those ads up according to zip code or even specific…

A good sign: More people saying ‘Take this job and shove it’

While overall job growth remains spotty, almost 2 million Americans left jobs voluntarily in April, the highest level in more than a year.

…Hmmm. makes me wonder if the HR dept appropriately flagged the reason for leaving. I think other factors also impact this trend such as ppl relocating because their partners, who were previously laid off, found work another state with better family opportunties like cost of living/home costs….

Judge rules EMC founder concocted $62M tax-shelter ‘sham’

Says judge regarding the late Richard Egan’s illegal tax dodge: “None of the participants in these complex transactions believed that they were real business transactions, with any purpose other than tax avoidance. Indeed, it is highly doubtful that any participant believed, even for a minute, that the transactions would withstand legal scrutiny.”

…Levinson LLP who wasn’t involved in the case.
The Egans didn’t settle. They deposited $62.1 million with the IRS and sued the government in 2005 to get the money back. Saylor wrote that a “significant feature of the scheme” was the reliance on legal opinions provided by four law firms that the transaction was legitimate.
This story in the MetroWest Daily News notes that Egan did much for the town of Hopkinton, Mass., where he lived and EMC is headquartered. I live in Hopkinton myself and have seen first-hand the good corporate citizenship of the…

Amex Gives You Money It Can’t Explain, Won’t Take It Back

Reader Chad was deployed to Iraq from 5/05 to 6/06. American Express gives a special rate to service members when they are deployed, but apparently Chad wasn’t getting it. They figured this out and let him know that they would be crediting his account with a mysterious number they couldn’t explain

…Reader Chad was deployed to Iraq from 5/05 to 6/06. American Express gives a special rate to service members when they are deployed, but apparently Chad wasn’t getting it. They figured this out and let him know that they would be crediting his account with a mysterious number they couldn’t explain. Then they credited all his accounts with this exact amount of money– even new ones he didn’t have while in Iraq. Free money is nice, but he’d rather they just give him the right amount.

Chad says:
Anyways, On 9/1/09 Amex credited my card for $299.10, because I was deployed to Iraq from 5/05 to 06/06 and service members get a special rate while on deployment. When I was deployed, Amex actually adjusted my rate and was very helpful.

But I guess they want to be really helpful, because they want to send me another $299.10 in 2009. The real kicker is… When I was deployed I only had one AMEX card. Since I have returned from deployment, I have a personnel amex card and two business cards. They gave me $299.10 on…

Need a Job? The Census Bureau Is Hiring

Unemployed? If you’re looking for something to get you out of the house, the Census Bureau will be adding 700,000 people during the spring and summer.

…Unemployed? If you’re looking for something to get you out of the house, the Census is hiring and apparently they’re really enjoying the sudden influx of lawyers and other professionals to choose from, says the Washington Post.

The WaPo says:
The Census Bureau expects to hire at least 700,000 people throughout the spring and summer for part-time jobs, paying $10 to $25 an hour, mostly to knock on the doors of people who don’t send in forms that will arrive in mailboxes this month. Many of the expected 3 million to 4 million applicants will be like Williams: highly educated and in the prime of their working life but sidelined by a recession that has driven the unemployment rate to almost 10 percent. So, what are they looking for? WaPo says you must be 18 and submit to an FBI background check that includes fingerprinting. it’s also helpful if you are actually from a neighborhood where the Census needs people for canvassing. They figure that people are more likely to open the door to a familiar face.

6 Popular Brands That Got The Taste of Social Media Backlash

Social media has exploded as an industry and changed the way businesses interact with their customers.

…t a real hip-hop maven and this site was actually developed by Sony. Guess we were trying to be just a little too clever. From this point forward, we will just stick to making cool products, and use this site to give you nothing but the facts on the PSP.
-Sony Computer Entertainment America.
Apparently, we didn’t learn the lesson about honesty all that well. Which is especially ludicrous given the fact that the target audience was already in love with the product.
4. Wal-Martbook. Wal Space. Wal-Fail
Remember The Hub? You know, the big social media forum for teens who really love hanging out at Wal-Mart? Wait, you don’t remember? Maybe that’s because their attempt at duplicating MySpace only lasted 10 weeks. Trying to convince the youth of America to talk about how much they love Wal-Mart might be the most unlikely scenario ever dreamed up by corporate America. The fact that it got approved is a testament to the chutzpah of whoever dreamed up the idea.

When you engage in social media, at least try to look…
