Do you have what it takes to own a successful business?

People start businesses for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, they are tired of working for someone else and want to be their own boss. Perhaps they came up with a solution to resolve a problem

…s look another example.

StarCraft 2, a real-time strategy game, was recently released. The game has both single and multiplayer abilities. It is logical to think that going through the single player portion, getting all the achievements, would prepare a player for the multiplayer part of the game. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The player might win the first couple of matches because the game tries to match people according to skill. It is very common (the norm) to possibly win a couple of matches then lose miserably over and over again, even if they successfully completed the single player portion of the game, to better players that have been practicing and playing longer. Everyone makes mistakes initially because everyone starts new, but if the player continues to make the same mistakes, the player will never excel.
The same holds true when playing with friends. If the friends are the same skill level, they will not become better players until they play against someone better and they lose. The…

As Its Ship Sinks, Newsweek Grasps at Gay Straws

Setoodeh’s cloddish arguments are at least keeping Newsweek in the spotlight at the moment, a place it hasn’t been since the Sarah Palin jogging cover of last November. But it’s not the kind of attention you want when you’re trying to convince someone to buy your supposedly serious publication.

…until it apologizes.
For his part, Setoodeh has revisited the issue, finally acknowledging that he is gay, whining about all the personal strife he’s had to endure in the aftermath, and trying to reiterate what he says is his main point, that there’s no gay actor of Clooney’s stature working today.
Setoodeh may have a real point somewhere in his tangled logic, but he delivers it in an incredibly flat-footed manner one that his editors, by rights, should have flagged and either asked for a rewrite or spiked.
His original piece excuses openly gay actors like Cynthia Nixon and Portia de Rossi from his argument, since they’re lesbians and straight men think it’s OK for them to kiss a girl and like it. In addition, de Rossi and Neil Patrick Harris don’t count because they inhabit broad caricatures unlike, say, Chuck Baxter, who busts out into Burt Bacharach songs.
The invocation of Rock Hudson is particularly weak. Yes, it was a different era, but contemporary audiences…

America’s Highest-Paid Female Bosses [Graphic]

In America, some of the most well known companies - the likes of Kraft Foods, Avon Products and PepsiCo have a woman at their helm, yet still, women account for only three percent of the chief executives at the helm of the 500 biggest US companies.

…For a long time, women have fought for equality, fought to be given the same jobs and pay as men. A few years ago it would have seemed impossible for a woman to be a CEO, as it wouldn’t be deemed an appropriate job - in fact, in some countries women still struggle for equality and its down to individual companies to bring in legislation.
In Germany, women in Europe’s largest economy on average earn 23.2 percent less than men. Yet Germany isn’t alone in the equality issues, despite women making up almost 40 percent of the global workforce, the number of female CEO’s across most industries remains low. Deutsche Telelekom, one of the country’s biggest companies unveiled plans to fast-track more women into management roles in the company. By 2015, the company want 30 percent of its middle and upper management positions to be filled by women - the first gender quota to be implemented at one of Germany’s top 30 DAX-listed companies.
So in Germany women are still facing a struggle, now what about America? In…

The Green Economy’s Secret Weapon: Aging Baby Boomers

Baby boomers, armed with years of valuable experience, are seeking “encore careers” in fields that a deliver a social benefit. Green jobs, which many see as a bright spot in an otherwise troubled economy, appear to be a natural fit, according to a recent report.

…and assist in the creation of new jobs for all ages,” the report said.

Between 5.3 million and 8.4 million people between the ages of 44 to 70 have shifted from midlife careers to encore careers, according to the 2008 MetLife Foundation/Civic Ventures Encore Career Survey. Half of those surveyed who hadn’t made the move indicated they were interested.

The report identifies eight job positions representing prime career opportunities for baby boomers: weatherization installers and crew leaders, energy auditors, solar contractors, solar installation trainers, outreach workers, and conservation and sustainability consultants and advocates.

“We have focused on areas where need exists and demand is expected to grow for boomers to use their talent and experience to further the sustainability of their communities, the nation and the planet,” the report said. “With their skills and willingness to do good, these individuals are primed to help to stem expected U.S. labor shortages across sectors.”

SEC charges father and son with fraud

The Securities and Exchange Commission said Monday it has charged a Florida father and son with overstating hedge fund values by as much as $160 million.

…WASHINGTON, Jan. 11 (UPI) — The Securities and Exchange Commission said Monday it has charged a Florida father and son with overstating hedge fund values by as much as $160 million.
Neil Moody and his son, Christopher Moody, claimed they controlled investments for three hedge funds that were actually managed by Arthur Nadel, who was charged last year with securities, the SEC said.
“The Moodys led investors to believe that they were faithfully managing funds invested with them. Instead, they abdicated their responsibilities to investors and ignored warning signs that should have alerted them to the fraud that was occurring all around them,” said Glenn Gordon, associate director of the SEC Miami office.
The SEC is seeking permanent injunctions, financial penalties and restitution, the regulator said in a statement.
Jeffrey Cox, an attorney for Christopher Moody, said in a statement Monday the SEC complaint “does not allege that Chris Moody knowingly intended to harm investors.”
