Jim Rogers predicts a new recession in 2012

Jim Rogers, the market sage, has warned the global economy is just two years away from another recession, but remains ill-prepared to cope with the after-effects.

…”For me a double-dip is another recession before we’ve healed from this
recession. The probability of that kind of double-dip is more than 50pc. I
actually expect it,” he said. His prediction came despite the…

Top Ten Worst Jobs In The USA

Here is list of top ten jobs that rank as the worst in 2010, according to research into 200 different positions in this year’s exclusive CareerCast.com Jobs Rated report.

…10. Mail Carrier
Pros: Stable employment, relatively high median income, good federal pension.
Cons: The unofficial motto of the Post Office is neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. This means you’re working on Christmas Eve, even in the middle of a blizzard.

Picture this as your typical workday: You wake up at 5a.m. (or 5p.m. for the night shift) and head to the dining hall for a breakfast of cafeteria food. Next comes a 12-hour shift working outdoors in either the desert heat, an ocean storm or the bitter cold of an Alaskan winter. There may even be armed groups nearby eager to kidnap you for ransom. As for the work itself, it’s backbreaking physical labor with a high risk of injury or death. And when the day is over, you still can’t go home because you work in an isolated location that you’re able to leave only every two weeks or so. And when it’s time to sleep, you head to your shared dorm room and crash until…

Experts:Ansel Adams photos found at garage sale worth $200M

Rick Norsigian’s hobby of picking through piles of unwanted items at garage sales in search of antiques has paid off for the Fresno, California, painter. Two small boxes he bought 10 years ago for $45 — negotiated down from $70 — is now estimated to be worth at least $200 million dollars, according to a Beverly Hills art appraiser.

…The photographs apparently were taken between 1919 and the early 1930s, well before Adams — who is known as the father of American photography — became nationally recognized in the 1940s, Streets said. “This is going to show the world the evolution of his eye, of his talent, of his skill, his gift, but also his legacy,” Streets said. “And it’s a portion that we thought had been destroyed in the studio fire.” How these 6.5 x 8.5 inch glass plate negatives of famous Yosemite landscapes and San Francisco landmarks — some of them with fire damage — made their way from Adams collection 70 years ago to a Southern California garage sale in 2000 can only be guessed. The person who sold them to Norsigian at the garage sale told him he bought them in the 1940s at a warehouse salvage in Los Angeles. Photography expert Patrick Alt, who helped confirm the authenticity of the negatives, suspects Adams carried them to use in a photography class he was teaching in Pasadena, California, in the early 1940s. “It is my…

Bailed-Out Banks Awarded $1.6 Billion in Executive Bonuses

Kenneth Feinberg, the Obama administration’s watchdog for executive pay at U.S. financial institutions has found 17 companies paid out $1.6 billion in bonuses shortly after receiving taxpayer-funded bailouts last year

…Ken Feinberg talks to ABC about cutting 15 percent at bailout firms.
But Kenneth Feinberg, the Treasury Department’s pay czar appointed in the wake of the financial crisis, says the payments were not technically “illegal” leaving the government little authority to do anything about it.

“At the time these payments were made, they were ill advised, bad judgment on the part of these companies, but they didn’t violate any statute, they didn’t violate any regulation at the time,” Feinberg told ABC News.

They were “in the face of the public interest, perhaps. But ‘contrary to the public interest’ — a statutory standard — no,” he said. “The taxpayer has a right to be outraged. Who wouldn’t be?”

Feinberg named the banks in a review of pay among the top 25 executives at 419 firms that received government assistance before February 17, 2009. Some of the payments exceeded $10 million, as in the case of one individual

The 17 firms identified in the report include American Express, AIG, Bank of America, Boston…

New Laws Target Bullying in the Workplace

There are some very important things they don’t tell you on career day.

…Legislatures are not the only ones standing up to bullies. In 2008, the Indiana supreme court struck a blow against workplace bullying when it upheld a $325,000 verdict against a cardiovascular surgeon. A medical technician who operated a heart and lung machine during surgery accused the surgeon of charging at him with clenched fists, screaming and swearing. The formal legal claims were intentional infliction of emotional distress and assault, but the plaintiff argued it as a bullying case, and had an expert on workplace bullying testify at trial. (Comment on this story.)Ideally, employers should rein in abusive bosses on their own, but that rarely happens. Many bullies are close to powerful people in the organization and carefully target less powerful ones. When John Bolton was nominated to be ambassador to the U.N. by President George W. Bush, a former subordinate told the Senate that Bolton was a “serial abuser” and in a phrase that has since entered the bullying lexicon a “kiss-up, kick-down sort of…

China now world’s biggest energy user

China overtook the U.S.

…International Energy Agency

London, England (FT.com) — China overtook the U.S. last year to become the world’s biggest energy user, the International Energy Agency revealed on Monday. Beijing’s new status is expected to make it even more influential in global energy markets, in determining prices and how it is used. China clinched the top slot more quickly than had been expected because the U.S. has over the past decade far outpaced China in using energy more efficiently. On a per capita basis, the U.S. still uses far more energy than China and remains less efficient than Europe. Fatih Birol, the IEA’s chief economist, said: “In the 2000, the US consumed twice as much energy as China, now China consumes more than the U.S.” He noted that the U.S. had improved the efficiency with which it uses energy by 2.5 percent annually during that time, while China managed only a 1.7 percent annual improvement. “On the one hand, the U.S. has come to a certain saturation of energy use, but there have also been lots of…

Mystery trader buys all Europe’s cocoa

Even Willy Wonka might struggle to use this much chocolate.

…Barbara Crowther, a spokesman at the Fairtrade Foundation, said that no
farmers in West Africa would benefit from the higher prices. She said: “This
speculation only serves to increase volatility and uncertainty. Part of the
problems in rent years have been the lack of investment in improving cocoa
farms. But the farmers have already been paid a set price none of this
money will filter down to them.”…

Helping Corporate Drones Live Their Dreams

As the global recession wears on, young professionals are increasingly aware that job security is a relic of the past. So why not quit now and follow your dreams?

…That’s the kind of advice Rafael Cervantes, 37, could have used five years ago, when he left a lucrative banking career in Manhattan, in the midst of Wall Street’s boom years, to launch the Moksha Yoga Teacher Training Program based in his native Mexico City. “There were few resources available back then,” he says. “People thought I was crazy, that I was going to live in a cave.” Recently, Cervantes launched a new consulting business that takes him throughout Latin America training professionals to achieve optimal balance between work, life and spirit. “I created a kind of perfect job for myself where I’m using all of my core tools and skills,” he says….
