Is President Obama Good for Business?

Presidents generate big buzz and an influx of customers when they visit restaurants and other establishments. But does it last

…”It started on Tuesday when the word was out about the visit and continued through today. We understand it’s a novelty buzz right now. We don’t know how to plan for when it wears off. If this continues, then we’ll have to increase our staff.”

Much like having celebrity patrons, a presidential visit — by any president, as many before President Obama have as well — can definitely put a small business on the map. Some don’t see a direct increase in sales, but still enjoy perks like photos with the president, which they can use for marketing on their storefronts and websites, and a more direct line to the White House staff.

Even well-known establishments with already-loyal followings can reap benefits from a presidential pit stop. Ben’s Chili Bowl, a Washington, D.C., landmark made famous by Bill Cosby and other celebrity customers, still saw an uptick in business surrounding a visit by then President-elect Obama.

“We were packed,” co-owner Sonya Ali says. “People started cheering. It was almost like…

From the NYPD to JetBlue

Some airlines try to hire flight attendants who are young and attractive. JetBlue Airways has a type, too: cops and fire fighters.

…his take-charge manner and calm under fire were crucial and his corny jokes and upbeat nature were infectious.JetBlue decided from the beginning that hires didn’t have to have airline experience and it wanted to hire locally. When Mr. Spivey showed up, it dawned on recruiters that people who had been through emergencies routinely wouldn’t panic onboard airplanes. Fire fighters and police officers come from careers where they dealt with the public and provided customer service, jetBlue officials say. They’re used to working holidays. They knew how to handle people in stressful situations and could take command of an aircraft cabin. “Past experiences are predictive of future behavior,” Chief Executive David Barger says. “People who don’t get too high and don’t get too low, you want that in areas where decisions have to be made.” Spivey Family Leonard Spivey at his retirement party from the NY Fire Department in February 1995. Vicky Stennes, jetBlue’s vice president of inflight experience, notes that the…

BP hit with $10bn lawsuit over Texas City ‘chemical leak’

BP has been unexpectedly hit with a $10bn (£6.2bn) lawsuit related to an alleged leak of toxic chemicals at its Texas City refinery earlier this year, adding to its woes over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

…The sale lifted BP s share price by 2.55 to 415.65p, as the company made a new
attempt to kill its well permanently. Incoming BP chief executive Robert
Dudley is in Russia today for meetings with senior politicians and
industrialists in his first visit to the country since he fled in 2008. A
BP spokesman said it does not comment on litigation….

Goldman Sachs prove once again they’re huge assholes

Goldman Sachs has had months to think about the new financial regulations the government is implementing. And by “think about,” I mean “find loopholes in.”The company has come up with a way to get around some restrictions on trading.

…on Friday, July 30, 2010 2:00 PMGoldman Sachs (GS) has had months to think about the new financial regulations the government is implementing. And by “think about,” I mean “find loopholes in.”The company has come up with a way to get around some restrictions on trading, Charlie Gasparino reports on Fox Business. The company is turning some of its traders into “asset managers.”See, proprietary stock-trading operations are a no-no under the new financial reform legislation. And Goldman has a huge prop-trading desk. So it is simply moving about half of those operations into its asset management division, Gasparino reports….

BP to Rebrand Gas Stations Across US to Amoco?

In a major rebranding effort launched to sidestep the bad reputation that’s sprouted from having caused the biggest environmental catastrophe in US history, BP is considering renaming all of its stateside gas stations ‘Amoco,’ or something else.

…since the spill began, and many have only been kept afloat by cash sent directly from BP. Boycotts, protests, and general anger with and distrust of the brand have brought gas sales tumbling.

There’s some resistance to the idea from certain parties in the company who feel that the BP brand will recover, and that supporting it now will pay off in the long run when it does.

There are 11,000 BP gas stations (and BP-owned subsidiaries like ARCO on the West Coast). Changing the name may help speed Americans’ inclination to forget about the BP spill, but it obviously doesn’t change any of the fundamentals behind the company’s practices. Though most of those gas stations are independently owned and operated by citizens who arguably don’t deserve to bear the brunt of such boycotts, it nonetheless would be a shame if BP succeeded in having its most public front to slither out of view.

The Best Airline Credit Cards Promos Right Now

Sure credit cards are just one of the things that got the world into a financial mess, but if you know what you’re doing they can also take you on that dream vacation. Bonuses and promotions can pay for your airfare, but don’t charge an infinite amount of umbrella drinks to your hotel room thinking you’re just paying for the next trip.

…Just received my Alaska Airlines Signature Visa Card. I get 25,000 for signing up and 2 complimentary lounge tickets. Annually, I get a $99 companion ticket and can use it for first class as well as coach. Great deal, considering my annual fee is $75. If I use the companion ticket to book first class, my wife and I are saving at least $500 (minus the $75 annual fee). Also, when I reserve tickets online, I get 3X mileage and 1,000 bonus miles. We live in Hawaii, so having this card compliments our Hawaiian Airlines Visa/mileage card….
