5 investing bubblesEven after multiple crashes, investors still tend to pile into overheated sectors. Where are the biggest risks today?1 of 6′A fantastic time for bubbles’Investors have lived through the calamitous crashes of real estate and tech stocks in a single decade. You’d think we would have learned to avoid the sort of frenzied enthusiasm that causes an investing category to see its value inflated beyond all reason. Alas, that is almost certainly not the case. Didier Sornette, who studies bubbles and is a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, says low-interest-rate, low-return environments, where everyone is looking for safe havens (sound familiar?), are perfect for new investment manias. “This is a fantastic time for bubbles,” says Sornette. “Right now there is not one bubble, but many, in our analysis.” With a surprising quantity of investing categories looking excessively frothy, Fortune decided to…

More Americans Taking Out 401k Loans

The number of people borrowing from their retirement-savings plans reached a 10-year high in the second quarter, according to Fidelity Investments, as Americans grappled with slowing economic growth.

…The number of people borrowing from their retirement-savings plans reached a 10-year high in the second quarter, according to Fidelity Investments, as Americans grappled with slowing economic growth.
The portion of 401(k) accounts with loans outstanding rose to 22 percent by the end of June from 20 percent a year earlier, the Boston asset manager said in a study released Friday. The number of people taking withdrawals for financial hardship increased to 2.2 percent from 2 percent a year earlier.
“The current economy has really resulted in the need for some individuals to borrow from their 401(k) or take a distribution to pay for some critical living expenses, which puts their retirement savings in jeopardy,” Beth McHugh, Fidelity’s vice president of market insights, said Friday.
The top reason for withdrawing money was to prevent foreclosure or eviction, she said. A record 269,962 U.S. homes were seized in the second quarter, according to Irvine’s RealtyTrac Inc., as economic growth slowed to a 2.4 percent…

American Airlines Adds Ridiculous "Special Coach Seats" Fee

It used to be that the money you were charged for a seat in basic coach was called a fare. But in our age of nickle-and-dime airline fees, even the most trivial parts of the flight experience are up for grabs.

…Our favorite part of this delightful innovation? Just like with every other additional fee or downgrade in-flight meals, checked luggage, carry-on bags, reward tiers, etc American is marketing the change as an empowering new “choice” or “option” that you now have. You can choose to pay for something you used to get for free, or you can choose to go without. The airline is actually including the new feature under their obnoxiously titled “Your Choices” umbrella, a name which we already found aggravating when they rolled it out to charge for early boarding. Obviously this doesn’t do much to enhance our appreciation of the program….

Freakonomics (Trailer)

…ade of Sumo wrestling and exposes searing and violent truths about this ancient and revered sport. Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) offers up a buoyant and revealing angle on the repercussions of baby names. Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing (Jesus Camp) balance levity and candor with their eye-opening profile of underachieving kids incentivized to learn with cold hard cash. Finally, Eugene Jarecki, who brought us the unforgettably powerful Why We Fight, investigates an unsettling theory to explain why crime rates dramatically dropped in the early ’90s. Seth Gordon (The King of Kong) weaves the pieces together with brisk interludes, providing context and commentary from the authors. Freakonomics exposes the hidden side of everything, debunking conventional wisdom, and revealing what answers may come if one just asks the right questions….

Suit Claims Disneyland Banned Woman From Wearing Hijab

The woman claims the Mouse won’t let her wear her hijab on the job, and have sent her home without pay three times for doing so. Today, she’ll try to go to work for the fourth time—and file a discrimination complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

…Dweezle says:
I agree that this person must have signed an agreement about what she wears to work, I also believe that religious beliefs should be followed to a reasonable limit. I mean should she be allowed to refuse to serve pork to customers as it is a Muslim Taboo (also Jewish taboo)

According to Leila Ahmed, nowhere in the whole of the Qur’an is the term hijab applied to any woman other than the wives of Muhammad..

According to at least two authors, (Reza Aslam and Leila Ahmed) the stipulations of the hijab were originally meant only for Muhammad’s wives, and were intended to maintain their inviolability. This was because Muhammad conducted all religious and civic affairs in the mosque adjacent to his home:
People were constantly coming in and out of this compound at all hours of the day. When delegations from other tribes come to speak with Prophet Muhammad, they would set up their tents for days at a time inside the open courtyard, just a few feet away from the apartments in which Prophet…

The Business Time Drain: An Estimated 11mil Meetings Daily

With an estimated 11 million formal meetings per day in the United States, corporate America has been held hostage by 3 billion meetings per year. This Infographic illustrates it nicely.

…more structure and fewer interrupting cell phone calls may create a more conducive environment for productivity. Dozens and dozens of additional options exist. However, it is clear that meetings are not going away, but in their current state they cannot continue.
What is the answer at your company? How are you handling unproductive meetings? Are there alternatives, or will meetings have to change to better fit the current, schizophrenic state of technology and communication?
