It’s No Cars Go In San Juan, Puerto Rico, Makeover

The government has decided to infuse the city with $1.5 billion dollars to re-develop San Juan and, most of all, make it a walking city, with no cars allowed.

…d imagine to be in dire need of a facelift and urban renewal. Images of a gorgeous coastline and old colonial architecture come to mind, but guess what? The old part of the city, “the Isleta,” is rife with poor urban planning scars, such as inaccessible beaches due to ports and an excessive reliance on cars. The government has decided to infuse the city with $1.5 billion dollars to re-develop San Juan and, most of all, make it a walking city, with no cars allowed.

The plan, announced last month, also lays out a new mass transit network, new roads and intersections, and beach access points. The motivation for the city re-design is in part due to the…

New Portal 2 Wheatley Footage (Video)

New Portal 2 video introduces British comedian Stephen Merchant (Extras, The Office) as the voice of Wheatley.

…Thank god we have REAL professionals here to tell us if the voice acting sucks. I mean, a normal person like myself might not be able to tell the caliber of a character voice from a scant 3 minute clip, but we are clearly in the presence of those who can. Someday I hope to be as discerning. Were I to type such to-the-point and well calculated comments, I’d probably just appear glib and dismissive. So I guess congratulations are in order for being more vastly more relevant and important than strangers! I eagerly await your credentials, gentlemen….

8 Most Outrageous Fees

When most people think of outrageous fees, they often think of airlines, which have become pros at conjuring up fees for every aspect of the flight - getting a window seat, checking a bag, asking for a pillow. But airlines aren’t the only businesses trying to make an extra buck, or $50, by charging high and outlandish fees these days.

Fuck Sustainability! Oh, Millions to be Made, You Say? Hmm..

When most people hear the word “sustainability” and other green buzzwords they tend to dismiss it immediately.

…S isn’t the only leading company to have found a business case for sustainability. General Electric has spent $5 billion on R&D in the first five years of ecomagination but the program to develop the clean technologies of the future has already generated revenues of $70 billion.

With such shining examples you might think companies would be falling over themselves to find new opportunities in social and environmental responsibility. But the reality is that many struggle. That’s why we’re launching a new toolkit to help companies find the business case for sustainability.

Our experience at Forum for the Future is that the complexity and uncertainty of sustainability creates major barriers to making a business case. First, the numbers are much “softer” than senior decision-makers are used to. Companies are often breaking new ground, which is difficult to model quantitatively, and are also anticipating future trends.

Second, companies get stuck in a vicious cycle: finance directors want to see a business case…

GE’s Ecomagination a Triumph, Stock a Disaster

There is no doubt GE takes corporate social responsibility seriously, but will it ever carry the company’s bottom line?

…”Responsible business,” says Bob Corcoran, “is good business.”

And what’s responsible business? “Make money, make it ethically and make a difference.”

Corcoran is vice president for corporate citizenship at General Electric (GE), a 30-year company veteran, and a good guy. We met in 2004 when we traveled together in Ghana while I was reporting a story on GE’s values for FORTUNE. Recently we spoke about GE’s 2009 citizenship report, and about what GE has learned in the past five years from its corporate citizenship efforts, including its high-profile campaign around ecomagination, which focuses the company, and its marketing, on products and services that help solve the world’s big environment problems.

Inside GE, ecomagination is deemed a success, so much so that it has spawned a sister initiative (if you can spawn a sister) called Healthymagination, focused on profitably creating better health for more people. GE says that it expects ecomagination product revenues to grow at twice the rate of GE’s overall…

From Sweden to the US to China. Volvo is Officially Chinese.

It’s official. Ford has announced today that it has completed the sale of Volvo and its related assets to the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Company Limited.

…its related assets to the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Company Limited (Geely).
The total purchase price for Volvo and the assets set forth in an agreement signed back in March was $1.8 billion, including a $200 million note and the balance in cash, with the cash portion subject to customary purchase price adjustments at closing. So far, Geely has issued the note and paid around $1.3 billion in cash to complete the sale.
Under the terms of the sale, Ford will continue to cooperate with Volvo in several areas in order to ensure a smooth transition, but will not retain any ownership in the Volvo business. Ford will also continue to supply Volvo with powertrains, stampings and other vehicle components for an undisclosed period of time, as well as provide engineering support and access to information technology.

The Man Who Bought The Silverdome For $583,000

Most entrepreneurs would be delighted to discover that a business they acquired included a phone that didn’t stop ringing. For Andreas Apostolopoulos, the thrill wore off fast.

…the Giant.

Apostolopoulos first heard about the availability of the Silverdome while on vacation in his native Greece. One of his three sons saw an ad in the Toronto Star announcing that the stadium would be auctioned in three days. The city of Pontiac could no longer afford the facility’s $1.5 million annual maintenance bill. Apostolopoulos cut his vacation short and raced home to Toronto. “I thought: Whatever it is, the land alone if I get it at the price I want it, it is worth the money,” he says. “And even if inside I don’t do anything else, even if I put some small teams of soccer to play, or some football, or some hockey I said to myself, I sense big opportunity here.”

Apostolopoulos, who had never seen the Silverdome in person, placed his bid by telephone from the office of Triple Properties, his Toronto real estate company. He was surprised when his lowball offer prevailed over two other would-be buyers, one of whom wanted to turn the Silverdome into a landfill. Immediately he made it clear to…
