The Return of Back-to-School Shopping

As summer winds to a close, retail stores across the nation are dusting off their back-to-school signs and loading shelves full of fresh loose leaf paper, pencils, pens, and everything else students need to hit the books and hallways once again.

…Back-to-school also means a new, or at least updated, wardrobe for many students. Styles change every year for both younger and older kids and, this year, popular fashion choices for girls include a jean-legging combo called jeggings, plaid shirts and long tunics. Boys of all ages will probably be wanting numerous graphic tees and shoes by Vans and Etnies.
But the biggest back-to-school shopping trip is unarguably for new college students who are moving away from home and need to purchase the basic amenities for dorm life for the first time. Smaller flat screen televisions are always a popular choice, as many parents won’t allow their sons or daughters to take the living room set off to the college. MarketWatch.com also notes that smartphones such the HTC EVO and BlackBerry Curve are sought-after items because of the mobile Internet access and wide variety of useful apps that they offer to students on their own for the first time.

Long-Term Unemployed Find It Pays Better Not To Work

It’s a quirk in the federal rules that’s most likely hurting thousands who have been searching for work for more than a year. In the first year of unemployment, the size of the benefit check is based on your old salary.

…/ Ten months after Mark Krawiec lost his road construction job, he eagerly took a six-week assignment on Route 2 that paid just over $1,000 a week. Big mistake. “By working and knowing it wasn’t steady, and it wasn’t going to last long, I cut my own throat,” said Krawiec, 60, of Plainville. That’s because in January 2010, the state Department of Labor reset his benefits based on the work he did in 2009. His weekly check dropped from $544 to $254. Krawiec had no idea that accepting work would slash his unemployment pay this way. Hardly anyone does. It’s a quirk in the federal rules that’s most likely hurting thousands of Connecticut residents who have been searching for work for more than a year, many from the hard-hit construction trades. In the first year of unemployment, the size of the benefit check is based on your old salary. You can go right back on unemployment after a temp job, and nothing changes. But federal law requires states to recalculate benefits for the second year. If you worked a few days…

4 Money Lessons From the Olympic Games

After spending pretty much all of my weekend watching Canada scoop up gold after gold, I realized that there are some money lessons one can learn from the Olympic events.

…t wake up the morning of the event and win a gold medal. It requires years of training and dedication to master the sport. Most athletes spend months and months in preparation for the Olympic games and only the most dedicated ones make it to the finals.
Finance: In order to become the master of your finances you need to put in the boring hours in prep work such as budgeting, reviewing and documenting things. You cannot expect to just go with the flow and still be in charge of your money, dedication and work is required.
Focus
Staying focused till the end is key in winning a gold medal in the Olympics. In several events I noticed that the leader would lose focus at the end and that split second cost him or her the gold. No matter how far he or she is ahead, only those who stay focused from start to finish will make it to the top.
Finance: Staying focused is just as important in your finances. If you start to lose sight of your goals and lose focus chances are that you will not reach your…

Flight Cancelled for Bad Weather? It’s Going To Get Worse

It’s been a grueling winter for many American travelers as airlines preemptively cancel flights ahead of any possible heavy weather. In early February alone, nearly 1 million passengers were stranded as 13,000 flights were canceled

…of flight delays between December 2008 and December 2009. In fact, among the overall causes of flight delays, “extreme weather” comes in a distant third to delays caused by late-arriving aircraft (whose delays, in turn, can be weather-related) and by air carrier delays.

Winter Storms Create Ripple Effect

Experts say the recent winter storms create a nearly unavoidable ripple effect on flights across the U.S. “We’ve had some particularly bad weather on the East Coast,” says Robert Mann, a New York-based airline industry analyst and former airline executive. “And the East Coast cities tend to be what are termed ‘pacing cities’ — which is to say, delays that either occur among arrivals or departures here tend to disproportionately effect flight operations elsewhere in the country.”

Some major U.S. airports, through a combination of reasonable weather and forward planning, have been spared the headline-making cancellation traumas brought on by the blizzards. Chuck Cannon, spokesman for Denver International…

Sites That Are Helping Consumers Fight the Fees

Financial institutions reap billions in profits from fees on consumers, many of whom lack the time or information to wade through the fine print.

Google’s retirement-plan report on Brightscope

Financial institutions reap billions in profits from fees on consumers, many of whom lack the time or information to wade through the fine print.
But Web sites like Mint, BillShrink and BrightScope are already giving them fee-killing tools. Consumers can be only a click or two away from ditching a financial institution even after years of being a loyal customer (which some angry consumers are doing).
This will put downward pressure on fees, says Robert Ellis, a principal with research and consulting firm Novarica. It hugely increases transparency on the cost side, he says. I believe it’s going to put a lot of dollars in flux.
Even with your 401(k) plan. BrightScope.com was founded two years ago by brothers Mike and Ryan Alfred. The two culled the data on companies’ 5500 forms filed with the government and unearthed audit reports from the depths of the U.S. Department of Labor.
Although the fine print has been there for years, the Alfreds were…

Reuters: Gay Social Networking Site Raises Seed Funding

Goldberg, the founder and CEO of Fabulis www.fabulis.com, recently raised $625,000 in seed funding in anticipation of launching his new website this spring. Goldberg said he hopes the site, which is still in beta test mode, will become a brand synonymous with gay men and their love of “celebrating life.”

…SAN FRANCISCO (Private Equity Week) - Serial entrepreneur Jason Goldberg has developed a new social networking site aimed at gay men that he called a cross between Facebook and Yelp.

Goldberg, the founder and CEO of Fabulis www.fabulis.com, recently raised $625,000 in seed funding in anticipation of launching his new website this spring. Goldberg said he hopes the site, which is still in beta test mode, will become a brand synonymous with gay men and their love of “celebrating life.”He said Fabulis will provide a place where gay men can go online to discuss and share places and cities to visit and reviews of what to see there, similar to a Yelp. Goldberg added the site will also include a location-sharing component, much like the social networking platforms of Foursquare or Gowalla, and provide Facebook-like connections among friends.A deeper component of a gay man’s lifestyle is that friends of friends become like an extended part of your family, Goldberg said.Goldberg, who previously founded tech…

Drugs companies face deeper cuts in research

The extent to which the recession has cut into high-value research and development jobs in the pharmaceutical industry will be laid bare this week as job losses in the industry climb to 12,000.

…2.5 billion) to the company, and AstraZeneca is facing the imminent patent expiry on Arimidex, a breast cancer drug that generated $878 million in sales last year.
Adding to their problems, the pharmaceuticals groups face a European Commission inquiry into allegations that they are delaying the arrival of generic medicines by offering payments to rival manufacturers. In response, the companies are seeking efficiencies in their labs, with greater focus on targeted areas of research.
AstraZeneca said last week that it would seek to outsource more of its research. The company is transferring almost all its manufacturing of pharmaceutical ingredients to a facility in China.
GSK started reshaping its business in 2007 by focusing on three areas:…
