Will the Coming Tax Changes Hit Your Wallet? [Infographic]

One of two certainties.

…With Bush-era tax breaks set to expire at the end of the year, Congress is gearing up for a knock-down-drag-out fight over whether to extend all of them, some of them, or none at all (and just in time for mid-term elections!). The Washington Post has a fun–albeit visually misleading–interactive infographic on how the options will affect your wallet. (More on the misleading bit below.)
The question is: Are we willing to put the country in deeper debt, to keep our taxes as they are now? The Post’s infographic shows three scenarios:
Letting all cuts expire
That would mean that our government incurs no extra debts. But it also means that most Americas will pay a bit more in taxes:

Extending all the cuts
This is the favored plan of most Republicans. It would cost the government $3.7 trillion over ten years in forgone revenues.

Letting cuts sunset only for those earning more than $250,000 a year
This is what Obama and many Democratic leaders are agitating for–here, the richest Americans will shell out…

Little Savings = Big Money (Graphic)

Oh, it’s only a cup of coffee. Just this one album.

…Oh, it’s only a cup of coffee. Just this one album. You probably find that you can easily justify most small purchases by telling yourself that it’s just this once or the item is low cost. But lots of low cost items over time can add up into some fast and furious debt. Imagine if every time you reached into your wallet to splurge, you put that money aside instead.

PerkStreet customers are no strangers to spending smart. The difference is the cash back perks they get for making those smart decisions. So they can reward themselves with that super duper large extra hot four sugar with skim milk coffee, or a great new song by their favorite band, or whatever their hearts desire without having to dip into the rent fund to do it. From where I sit in PerkStreet customer land, those little things sure are adding up to a whole lot of awesome.
How about you? Are you ready to join us in PerkStreet Customer Land? We’d love to see you here.

Day Trading Is Not for the Faint of Heart

These people move money in and out of positions on a daily basis — and take their profits from day to day rather than waiting for months or years. They are not simply investors – they are traders.

…a person falling into this classification must keep no less than $25,000 of cash or equities in their margin account at all times. If this balance falls below the required minimum, no further positions can be opened in the margin account. Once the pattern day trading restriction is set, it remains for at least three months before you can have that restriction removed.
And if these margin limits and restrictions aren’t enough to make your head spin, consider the complexity of timing buy and sell decisions on a daily basis. It might look easy from the outside, but short-term trading is a high-risk business. If anyone tells you to try it because it’s easy money, take that advice with a grain of salt.
Remember: don’t trade with money that you cannot afford to lose. It takes only one big loss to wipe out several smaller profits.

Times loses almost 90% of online readership

Less than three weeks after the Times paywall went up, data shows a massive decline in web traffic.

…Link JimmyLoser 20 Jul 2010, 11:01AM “when The Times loses readers who wouldn’t pay tuppence for it, it loses nothing.”
Yes!
The online advertising model doesn’tt work. You cannot generate enough revenue to pay for bandwidth far less journalism, photography and sub editors, far less a profit for investment. Google ads? The nunbers have to be way more than anything the Timesonline was getting pre-paywall. (Think of your own online behaviour. All those hours online, how many times have you actually clicked on a Google ad? Or a banner ad?)
I am no fan of Murdoch or the Times, Sunday Times, etc, I don’t buy his products. But I hope the paywall works well enough to generate decent income. Otherwise, in the medium term, ‘good’ journalism is doomed, online or in print. The Guardian (which I still buy) is not covering itself in glory with this smug, desperate ’story’. Recommend? (8) Report abuse Clip…

How To Invest In Water

Many people believe that water will be privatized in the next few decades. Without question, we’ve already seen a move in that direction just by the dominance of bottled water in the beverage industry, and private companies taking over the water needs of many cities, states and countries

…Intersting topic. With a growing world population, the need for water will only increase. As it is now, there are millions of people without good drinking water.
Water is a need. If you had to choose water or an iPhone, you would choose water. If you had to choose water or a house, taking it to an extreme, you would still choose water. Without water you won’t survive, without a house, you could find a cave:)
Also interesting to consider ethical perspectives of this. I’ll have to think about this one a bit before taking a stand but I would say that it’s a very forward-thinking topic to consider….

I Hate Mutual Funds. (7 Reasons Why)

Trusting someone else with your money.

…Surely you’ve caught me whinging about mutual funds. My complaints are a little bit less generalized than what I made myself seem to be. This is because when I mention mutual funds, this is directed at a broadly used type. The humanly managed funds. Indexes and index funds are a little different. They’re tracked rather than trying to be beaten by itchy fingered humans. The fees are much.
Allow me to elaborate on my current ire.
What’s the beef with mutual funds?

Essentially, the premise behind mutual funds is to let professionals handle all of the investment and hoarding work for you. That in itself should already be an extreme turn off. It’s bad enough that we have to contend with our own humanly flaws. It’s even worse when you put someone else’s flawed emotions as your main hoarding instrument. Even if they are so-called professionals by the books, the lack of control and full financial liability makes me wonder if it’s truly even an investment.
Allow me to go over in simpler terms, my ire exactly in…

Obama Administration Announces a Massive Piracy Crackdown

According to the Obama administration, the RIAA, and MPAA, the world economy is pretty much doomed if we don’t start prosecuting pirates at home and abroad. Without such a crackdown, businesses will go bankrupt the coalition argues. Biden states, “Piracy hurts, it hurts our economy.”

…The real thieves are IP advocates themselves since they effectively attempt to dictate to third parties how they’re supposed to utilize their actual, physical, scarce property, and to impede speech. As far as I can tell, that is partial slavery dictated by random third parties via arbitrary “laws”. The only just laws are those that protect property rights, and so called intellectual property is not property at all. It is a farce, and everyone has bought into it not by actual valuation of the issue, but rather they take it for granted because it has been around for over a hundred years, so it must be right. Right?…

Zero accountability for this taxpayer-teat sucking startup

There needs to be some accountability from biofuel hypesters like Range Fuels who go out and make outrageous claims and then fail to deliver on them.

…John Gear-
Bless you, whoever you are. You stole the words out of my mouth. Unique means one of a kind.
You can be very innnovative, or fairly creative or insightful. You cannot be very unique.
BTW, I take issue with RR that the US energy picture is a house on fire. There are global gluts of fossil fuels right now, even while game-changing technologies PHEVs and lithium batteries appear to improving radically, and getting very close to commercialization.
There are also epic global and domestic supplies of natural gas, and CNG cars are a proven commodity.
Demand for crude is falling, not rising, all over the developed world and I think round two of consumption declines are coming. When a Ford-Lincoln luxury cars can get 41 mpg (as they do), then I think we will see permanently shrinking demand for oil in the USA from now on.
Japan and France are back to late 1970s levels of consumption, despite far higher living standards than 40 years ago. And still their crude demand is falling.
Never bet against the…
